Our
Story:
Samaritan
House—Simcoe County was incorporated in May of 2001. We have been
operating, over the past 4 years, out of lower level of Burton Avenue United
Church, which has provided space to run our programs.
Current Programs:
· NEW!
Transitional Safe Housing for Women & Children
leaving abusive and violent relationships: Transitional Housing is quite
different from crisis shelter housing, in that it provides long term
affordable housing & support services for both adults & children. The
apartments are furnished and the stay is up to one year. Programs may
include:
Parenting, Like Skills, Family Violence Prevention Program, Computer
Training/Job Search, and
Educational Supports for Children.
· Children’s
Literacy Program:
One on One tutoring is
provided weekly. Workshops for tutors, graduated level reading material,
reading level assessments, grade level resource material and dedicated
tutors make it possible for Samaritan House to provide a literacy program
that is more than just reading.
· Adult
Computer Training and Job Search: Provided
3 afternoons a week. Basic training in Windows and Word is offered.
· Drop-in:
Families are
taking an active role in
sharing responsibilities regarding the drop-in, which provides clothing and
household items. Coffee is on at the centre Monday thru Wednesday with a
play area provided for the children.
· Youth
Life Skills Program:
Eight weekly
sessions, three times a year; youth from grades 7 to 9 will address issues
concerning: Conflict Resolution, Boundary Setting, Communications, Health,
Goal
Setting, Anger & Stress Management.
From the Community:
“As a
principal with fourteen years experience in educational administration, I
have never experienced such a rewarding, satisfying & effective
school-community partnership as I have with Samaritan House over the past 4
years.”
Catherine Hannon—Principal, King Edward Public School
“Thank
you for being there, for listening, for walking with our family. We have
gone through such difficult times over the past 3 years and now things are
looking better.”
